Pregnant Man Thomas Beatie Reveals His Joy and Struggles

Thomas Beatie is pregnant and carrying a child for his wife and himself. He spoke to the Advocate and some highlights from the interview include:

“I am transgender, legally male, and legally married to Nancy. Unlike those in same-sex marriages, domestic partnerships, or civil unions, Nancy and I are afforded the more than 1,100 federal rights of marriage. Sterilization is not a requirement for sex reassignment, so I decided to have chest reconstruction and testosterone therapy but kept my reproductive rights. Wanting to have a biological child is neither a male nor female desire, but a human desire.

Our situation sparks legal, political, and social unknowns. We have only begun experiencing opposition from people who are upset by our situation. Doctors have discriminated against us, turning us away due to their religious beliefs. Health care professionals have refused to call me by a male pronoun or recognize Nancy as my wife. Receptionists have laughed at us. Friends and family have been unsupportive; most of Nancy’s family doesn’t even know I’m transgender.”

When Thomas got pregnant for the first time he said:

“I ended up having an ectopic pregnancy with triplets. It was a life-threatening event that required surgical intervention, resulting in the loss of all embryos and my right fallopian tube. When my brother found out about my loss, he said, ‘It’s a good thing that happened. Who knows what kind of monster it would have been.’”

Now he’s five months pregnant and said:

“On successfully getting pregnant a second time, we are proud to announce that this pregnancy is free of complications and our baby girl has a clean bill of health. We are happily awaiting her birth, with an estimated due date of July 3, 2008.”

I don’t know why people have to be so cruel. His brother should be ashamed of himself to have been so heartless when he was experiencing such a traumatic loss during the first pregnancy. People in the medical field who are servicing this couple should not only be professional, but be compelled to treat them with compassion, especially in a humane manner. They’re not animals! I think that’s great that he and his wife have found success in growing their family. Best of luck to them.

There has to be some standards in a society. This insanity lowers the standard to such a degree that anything could be explained away as normal by sayin it brings happiness to my life. This is beyond absurd. This kind of thing (including homosexuality) is bringing our society to a point that anything degraded and raunchy is viewed as proper and anything naturl is viewed as wrong. Stupidity .. I guess the sexually transmitted diseases these perverts share with each other will eveentually catch up to them. problem is our tax dollars will pay to convalesce them

Or it could be our compulsive need to live in a senseless binary society that insists on oppressing one side of the coin over the other and views any mixing of the two as “gross” or “wrong” that brings down society. Or it could be the arbitrary standards that define men or women that’s wrong with society. And then any in between of this of said arbitrary definition gets people all freaking out because they realize what bullshit it all is and they can’t handle it.

Seriously. What is gender? Why does this bother people THAT much?

It’s bigotry that brings this society down, NOT transgender people OR homosexuals.
Hell, they’re technically still a hetero married couple. That’s something you can relate to, right?

Life isn’t always black or white. Gender isn’t as clear cut as people like to make it out to be. It’s all part of the human condition.

If you can’t handle something that foreign, I suggest not leaving your house and staying away from the internet.

Either way, they’re still human beings. The only thing I’m appalled by is the treatment they’re getting.
