Natalie Cole Slams Grammys for Amy Winehouse Awards
photo courtesy of PR Photos/www.prphotos.comNatalie Cole has slammed the Grammy voters for Amy Winehouse’s five awards at the 50th Grammy Awards. She said:
“I think she has a great talent, but I don’t agree with the Grammys giving her those nods. I think it sends the wrong message, that even in the midst of her stupor of drugs she can get nominated for all these awards. It’s a slap in the face to musicians and artists who work very hard that they turn around and give it to someone who really obviously doesn’t have a grasp of what she has. I’ve been in this business over 25 years and I sacrificed five years of my own life on drugs and almost lost my life because of it. So I take great offense to almost see someone getting glory out of being in the position that they’re in - she needs to get her life together and embrace her craft.”
While I do agree that Amy Winehouse is not in a position to be a role model to others right now because of her battle against drug addiction, she wasn’t rewarded for that, she was rewarded for the music she made. Amy isn’t the first musician that was in trouble with drugs or the law that has received awards too. It would’ve been nicer for Natalie to wish her well in her recovery rather than rain on her parade.

I totally agree with you. That was a shockingly transparent envious comment. Amy Winehouse is the most unusual break-out vocal talent, she is an amazing song writer. I own her album and it is a watershed piece of contemporary musical art. She is an original. Her art shone in spite of her problems, not because of them.
I’d bought her music before the craziness. Shame on you Natalie. That was not classy. It was desperate and pathetic by a singer who has created nothing fresh and relevant in a long time. Sour Grapes.

I use to be a big Natalie fan but not anymore.
I think that she ought to take back what she said and give an apology to Amy.
I thought how hipocritical as soon as I heard it.
Maybe Natalie should take a stand and give her Grammy back for being a coke head, besides selling herself out by singing her fathers song against her mother’s wishes.

The Art of Amy Winehouse won the awards. The academy has justly recognized her body of work. The awards are not for the way she has dealt with her life issues. We are all human and make mistakes. Pray for the woman to make better choices in life and to receive the comfort of grace she now so desperately needs. She has been blessed with a rare and special talent. She has touched the hearts and souls of millions across the world. In the vein of Lady Day, Ethel, Sarah, Etta, Ella …….. the great music has a chance to return. Get well Amy. My two cents.
