American Idol Top 10 Guys Review and Prediction

This week’s theme was 70’s week but the guys weren’t that great tonight with a few exceptions. Overall, I was pretty disappointed. Here’s a review and prediction of who’ll get the boot this week:

  • Michael Johns, wasn’t that exciting tonight. I love that song “Go Your Own Way” by Fleetwood Mac, but I don’t think this was the best song choice for him. His performance was okay.
  • Jason Castro, mediocre performance. I really liked him so much more last week. I agree with the judges in that he should’ve picked a different song (he sang Bee Gees “I Just Want to Be Your Everything”) and should’ve tried to perform without his guitar to show off his voice. I hope he gets another chance though.
  • Luke Menard, good voice, but sounded a little nasal on a couple of notes. I think Simon was too harsh in his criticism and always has something negative to say to him. His performance was better than last week. I hope he sticks around for a few more weeks because he’s easy on the eyes.
  • Robbie Carrico, seemed like a poser. His performance was pretty weak and actually a bit on the corny side. I don’t find him a “true” rocker, at least his voice didn’t sound like it tonight or last week. The vocals weren’t awful, but it didn’t match the song. Simon liked it though but his feedback was inconsistent tonight. He told Luke Menard that his vocals weren’t that great compared to Freddie Mercury’s, however, didn’t say the same thing about this guy compared to Foreigner’s Lou Gramm.
  • Danny Noriega, beautiful voice, but chose to sing a boring song. The judges liked his performance, but said he was thinking too much and should just let loose.
  • David Hernandez, nice surprise tonight! He actually showed off his voice more this week and stood out.
  • Jason Yeager, awkward performance. I felt like I was sitting in a lounge at a hotel watching him perform. He didn’t sound terrible, but it wasn’t the kind of thing I’d ever want to hear or see again, even if I could for free. Randy, Paula and Simon seemed to be in agreement that it was a poor choice of song (Doobie Brothers “Long Train Running”). Simon was a little cruel when he said the performance seemed like he was “drunk at a party”. Ouch.
  • Chikezie Ezie, did a great job tonight showing his vocal range. He threw back a little jab at Simon about wearing repeat clothing on TV which was funny.
  • David Cook, enjoyed his vocals on Free’s “All Right Now” while playing guitar. However, I found him a bit rude to Simon which understandably seemed to piss Simon off. Simon’s told him that his performance was solid and then his choice of words in criticizing him weren’t the best when he said he lacked charisma in the intro video clip. David retorted, “Fortunately, I don’t have to win you over,” which I think was out of line as a contestant. He should instead be able to take the criticism and just say, “Thanks for your feedback or your opinion.” He’s not one of my faves right now because of his attitude.
  • David Archuleta, seems to have a beautiful spirit while he’s singing. I absolutely hated his version of “Imagine” by John Lennon because the song is such a classic and doesn’t need to be changed at all, but he sang it with a lot of sincerity and innocence. The judges unanimously believed he had the best performance of the night. Simon went as far to say that he could win the competition, even suggesting the other 19 contestants should be worried.

My faves from tonight, even though I may or may not have loved the songs they sang or the arrangement: David Hernandez, Chikezie Ezie, and David Archuleta.

My prediction for the two getting the boot: Jason Yeager and Robbie Carrico
